Public Family Trees on Ancestry
The public trees on Ancestry document enslaved people as I find them in various documents, and their families as the record trail comes forward. There are enslavers as well, in order to track family ties, movements of the enslaved through sales or successions/probates. One is focused primarily on Rosedown Plantation in West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, as my Mother-in-Law Rosa Collier McCann nee Williams was born there to sharecropper parents. Her Grandfather Alexander Williams was a Civil War veteran, and he was still living there, in an old slave cabin. Since the property was one of many plantations owned by the Turnbulls, other West Feliciana Parish plantations and documents are being compiled and added to this tree.
Rosedown Plantation Enslaved to Families – and other related Plantations
The other public tree currently contains enslaved folks from Bayou Plantation of West Baton Rouge Parish, owned by Lobdell family. The tree was populated by using a document entitled “List of Slaves belonging to Bayou Plantation 1st October 1859.” Names, birthdates, ages, family connections, and some updates including Sold and born after 1859 made it possible to create a tree with 15 distinct family units and 9 individuals. Later work will build out the families using census and other documents.
