This is the flag of the 84th Regiment of the U.S. Colored Infantry, a unit formed at Port Hudson, Louisiana. It originated as the 12th Corp D’Afrique, one of 30 units raised in Louisiana to fight on behalf of the Union in the American Civil War. Slaves escaped to join these units, including many from Rosedown Plantation, of the St. Francisville, Louisiana area.
